Maquoketa Weekly Sentinel, March 27, 1856:
Miss D.L.Clarke opened last Monday a select School in the room directly over Mr. F. Scarborough's grocery store, for the benefit of those who may favor her with their patronage. Having had considerable experience in teaching, we can recommend Miss Clarke as being capable of teaching all the branches of education she may introduce. We bespeak for her a full school. Her terms of tuition are very moderate.
