Maquoketa Weekly Sentinel, February 14, 1856:
Maquoketa Woolen Factory Burnt Down. Total Loss Of $4,000.00.
On Thursday morning last the woolen factory of Mr. Thomas Wright on the Maquoketa River, was burned to the ground. It is presumed that the fire originated from the saw mill or turning lathe adjoining the factory. There were a couple persons sleeping in the factory at the time, but so rapid were the flames that it was with difficulty they escaped. Nothing but a few rolls of cloth were saved, and that at a sacrifice of singed hair, by Mr. L.G.Ransom, who merits considerable praise for his perseverance and energy.
The loss falls heavily upon Mr. Wright as there was no insurance upon the building or machinery. The saw mill adjoining, belonging to Mr. Sears, was damaged to the amount of $400.00.
We have not learned whether Mr. Wright intends to build again, but hope he will, as the loss of his factory will be very materially felt by the community generally.
