Jackson Sentinel, September 29, 1898:
Burt Goodenow reached home from the Copper River gold region, Alaska, last week looking hail and hearty, a little more bewhiskered than formerly, and thoroughly convinced that it was folly for men to journey to the far away Alaska gold diggings for the glittering article. Thousands of others had also paid dearly to learn that the Alaska boom was maintained very likely by false reports instigated by transportation companies, who are getting rich on the people who are spending a great deal more to get to Alaska than will ever be taken from the gold mines there.
