Jackson Sentinel, September 29, 1898:
Loyal Atherton Dead.
A telegram from Jacksonville, Florida, to Stephen Walker, his brother-in-law, brings the sad tidings of another death in the volunteer U.S.Army. This time one of our own Company M boys, Loyal Atherton. The remains will be sent to Maquoketa for interment and will arrive Friday night or Saturday morning.
