Felderman Says He's Receiving Everyone's Aid.
Jackson County will have a "dry" New Year's Eve, Sheriff Loren Felderman asserted today, disclosing in a statement to The Jackson Sentinel that his edict declaring an "all-out war" on illegal liquor sales, made Monday, has met with "wonderful co-operation from everyone."
Felderman the first of the week decreed that "all laws prohibiting the illegal sale of liquor will be strictly enforced" in Jackson County. The Sheriff stressed in his announcement that he "meant business" elaborating on the fact that he fully intended "to act upon all illegal liquor sales complaints immediately." Felderman also enlisted the aid of state officials in making what the Jackson County Sheriff termed "unannounced inspections" periodically to determine whether or not tavern keepers and other retail outlets are complying with the state liquor laws. Liquor-by-the-drink is prohibited by Iowa law.
By Wednesday morning Sheriff Felderman stated in an interview with a reporter from The Jackson Sentinel "all tavern operators in the county had been informed in one way or another of our declaration. I personally have, within the past two days, visited a number of these establishments and am happy to report strict compliance with my directive. From all appearances this office is receiving wonderful co-operation from everyone. Of course, there are some who dislike this crack-down on liquor, but they're going to have to get used to it," Felderman said.
The Sheriff's office, too, has received a pledge of co-operation from the new Jackson County Attorney, Walter J. McCarthy. McCarthy, who assumed his duties today(Friday), succeeding Ralph M. Kauffman, whom he defeated in the Nov. 4th election, said Monday that he would co-operate fully with the Sheriff and other law enforcement officials in any matter of law violation which is brought to my attention.
Following receipt last April from Attorney General Robert L. Larson of a letter stating Larsons' office had been informed liquor and gambling laws in Jackson County were not being enforced, then County Attorney Ralph M. Kauffman directed that all illegal liquor sales cease. Kauffman's office hadn't received any complaints of violations since that time Kauffman declared Tuesday. (Jackson Sentinel, January 2, 1953.)
