1948 Statistical Survey of Jackson County.
Marriage Declines
County marriages fell off slightly last year. Marriage licenses were issued to 184. 202 were granted in 1947.
Fewer Divorces
The number of divorces experienced a sharp decline. They dropped from 29 in 1947 to 16 in 1948. The peak was 1945, with 34 separations on record. The yearly average average for the past decade was 20. In 6 out of 16 cases the husband was the plaintiff. Desertion was charged in four instances, cruelty in seven and cruel and inhuman treatment in five. One couple had been married less than three months and three separated after more than 20 years.
Births and Deaths
Clerk of Court G. Edward Binns' office recorded 266 births for the year. December, 1948 births are not included...184 deaths happened during the year. December 1948 deaths are not included.
Coroner's Report
The 1948 annual report of Jackson county coroner, Dr. J.J.Tilton on deaths he investigated shows two farm accidents, one farm tractor and one struck by lightning; four suicides by hanging and one by carbon monoxide; one drowning; one accidental death by carbon monoxide; one infant smothering in bed; three deaths as a result of burns; eight heart attacks; four auto accidents; and one motorcycle accident.
