The 24th Iowa Infantry Volunteers were mustered out at Savannah, Georgia, July 17th(1865), and paid off at Davenport to July 24th. Company "I" of this regiment was organized in this place(Jackson County), August 15, 1862. The commissioned officers were Capt. James W. Martin, 1st Lt. Asa E. Tubbs, 2nd Lt. William Lane. During the operations against Vicksburg the regiment belonged to the 13th Army Corps and suffered greatly at Champion Hills. It afterward went to Louisiana and from there was sent to Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, and transferred to the 13th Army Corps. After the surrender of Lee and Johnston the regiment was transferred to the 10th Army Corps and was sent to Georgia and stationed at Augusta. Capt. Capt. Martin, during his whole term of service, was never at any time absent from his command excepting during a short leave of absence of twenty days.
