John Bowen-was a farmer and stock-raiser who lived in sec. 34, Butler Township. He was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1820. He and his wife, Catherine (McCarthy) immigrated to America in 1843. They settled first in Rochester, New York, where they lived until 1848. They then moved to Chicago, Illinois.
In 1853 they moved to Butler Township where Mr. Bowen purchased 440 acres of land. They were the parents of six children: James, Daniel, Julia, Maggie, Johnnie and Katie. Mr. Bowen was an interested supporter of schools and other public matters and was elected to other various public offices.
