James Flynn was a farmer in Sec. 21 of Butler Township. He was born in 1817 in Roscommon County, Ireland. He was a government officer in County Limerick for seven years. In 1844 he married Margaret Calahoun and they immigrated to Sincoe County, Canada. For twenty years he held the offices of assessor and collector. In 1868, the Flynn’s moved to Jackson County and bought 180 acres of land. Mr. Flynn was assessor for four years, a writer and Justice of the Peace.
