Tom Wallace-One of the earliest settlors of South Garryowen, was a school teacher who immigrated to America from County Cork, Ireland in 1846. Tom and his wife bought land from the government for $1.25 an acre, near where the church is. They were the parents of twelve children, seven sons and five daughters.

One of Tom’s sons, Jack Wallace, married a girl named Mary Edwards. They were the parents of nineteen children. Jack lived to the age of 96.
