Bar Endorses Walter L. Keck for Judgeship
Recommend to Governor Appointment of Maquoketa Attorney to Succeed late Judge C. L. Ely

All indications now point to the appointment of Attorney Walter L. Keck as judge of the district court to succeed the late Judge C. L. Ely. At a meeting of the Jackson County Bar association Monday morning, that body endorsed the appointment of Mr. Keck as did also the Clinton county association in the afternoon, and it is expected that Scott and Muscatine counties will readily concur in the recommendation which will be submitted to Governor Herring tomorrow or Thursday.

It was understood that by agreement, bar association meetings are to be held in each of the counties of the district – Clinton, Jackson, Scott and Muscatine – that upon receipts of the recommendations from the various associations, Governor Herring will act accordingly.

While the attorneys in each county may make their own recommendation, it was reported that leaders have agreed to center upon Attorney Keck and that it is expected he will receive the appointment.

Judge Ely’s term would have expired December 31, 1934, and the appointment will be to fill the vacancy until that time. Election of a successor will take place at the fall election next year.

We heartily commend this appointment of Mr. Keck to this important post, as his ability as an attorney is recognized throughout the district and state, and we are glad that the toga recently laid aside by the lamented Judge Ely is to be awarded to another Maquoketan, who like Mr. Ely, has been an outstanding success in his profession.
