DR. ASA B. BOWEN OF MAQUOKETA.
Who Has Never Before Aspired to Office.

Dr. Asa B. Bowen of Maquoketa, the Republican candidate for State Senator, was born April 12, 1842, at Eastford, Conn. The early youth of the doctor was spent on the rough old farm in Connecticut. When he had finished the district school, he entered the Mexico Academy at Oswego, N. Y., and following a preparatory course there, taught several terms in the schools of that city. Soon after this, he commenced the study of medicine and in 1864 enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the medical department on the man of war Neptune, the flagship of the Convoy Squadron which fought during the civil war the enemies of the flag in and around the West Indies. After the war he resumed his medical studies, graduating from the Albany Medical college in 1868, and devoting considerable time to clinical studies in New York City.

Over a third of a century ago, he came to Maquoketa where he had been in constant practice making a name for himself as one of the foremost surgeons in Iowa. He is a member of the Iowa State Medical society and the American Medical association, and belongs to the Masonic fraternity. He has always shown himself progressive and public-spirited.

A lifelong Republican, he cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln and has never been able to convince himself that he began in the wrong party. For years he has been one of the foremost Republicans in Jackson county, always attending his party caucuses and doing his full duty as an American citizen. Yet, until this fall, he has never asked office. Dr. Bowen has always shown himself in his professional and social life to be pleasing and kindly in disposition, as well as broad minded and honorable. His popularity is deserved and is in every way worthy of the support of all those who desire to see Jackson county ably and well represented in the Upper Home of the Iowa Legislature.
