LEIN, LEWIS S., Vice President, Jackson State Savings Bank, Maquoketa, was born at Roland, October 11, 1899, the son of Oscar O. and Johanna (Johnston) Lein. He was graduated from the Roland High School in 1918, where he had been class president for four years; he is also a graduate at Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. Mr. Lein’s first banking experience was with the Iowa Trust and Savings Bank in Des Moines. After graduation from business college he became a bookkeeper for the Randall Savings Bank. In 1922 he accepted the position of assistant cashier with the First national Bank of Roland remained there until 1929 when he was appointed assistant receiver by the National Banking Department, Washington, D. C.; appointed receiver in 1932, First National Bank of Lost Nation and First National at Maquoketa. In 1935 he was appointed cashier for the Maquoketa Bank and Trust Company which merged with the Jackson State Savings Bank in 1938, at which time Mr. Lein became vice president and later also a director; he continues here to date. He is a member of the Iowa Bankers Association, is committee chairman and member of American Bankers Association, Past Worshipful Master of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Commandery, Royal Arch, Maquoketa and El Kaaba Temple (Shrine) Davenport, Knights of Pythias and Chamber of Commerce. He has been secretary and director since 1944 of the Jackson County Fair Association and is past secretary and director of the Maquoketa Country Club. During World War II, he was County Finance chairman of War Bond drives. He also holds the executive posts of vice president and director of the Jackson Investment Company. In religious belief Mr. Lein is a Lutheran. His hobby is golf. In 1930 at Wood Lake, Minnesota, he married Ruth Helvig, daughter of Lars and Carrie (Sampson) Helvig. Mrs. Lein is an officer in the Order of the Eastern Star, past president of the Women’s Missionary Society and president of the Tuesday Literary Club. Mr. and Mrs. Lein have the following children: Larry L., born in 1932, a junior, Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls; Don C., born in 1934, a freshman at the American Institute of Commerce, Davenport.
