I have an individual showing up in the 1880 census for Lenox township in Iowa County. I havent been able to find this Lenox on a map, or any other reference to it. I am searching for records of an AVA MAY SPECK who was orphaned in Cedar, was taken in by a Charles Knox Richards family. (My research shows that Charles Knox Richards lived and was married in Benton County, and I found someones tree online that says that he had children born in Norway. She shows up with them in Lenox in 1880.)
My questions - was Lenox Township near Norway?
Does it still exist?
What school might she have gone to while living in Lenox?
By any crazy miracle, are there any school records from that time frame? I would be looking for records between 1875 and 1885, but especially 1880 when we know she was there.
This is a tough one - I'm trying to trace the movements of a child, female, orphaned and on the move. Ay-yi-yi!!
I know she was 3 years old with her parents in Cedar, Linn County in 1870. And then i find her again in Lenox, Iowa County with this other family in 1880 (listed as "at school"). Later she was married in Nebraska in 1887. I'm trying to find out how long she was with that Richards family. Perhaps she moved from familly to family, and i only caught her in a short stay with this family in the 1880 census. Or.. Perhaps she was raised by this family who headed on to Kansas by 1885, but is no where to be found in the 1885 census.
Any help at all, any thoughts, suggestions, comments would be very appreciated.
