Harold Schmidt, 101, of Victor, IA died on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, IA.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Victor. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

The family will receive friends at a visitation to be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, June 24 at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor.

Memorials may be designated to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to Essence of Life Hospice and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory, PO Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347. Memories and condolences may be shared with Harold’s family online at www.smithfh.com.

Harold was born on May 1, 1923, the son of Herman Fredrick Schmidt and Alma Emilie (Merck) Schmidt on the family farm in rural Victor, Iowa, where he was also raised. He was educated at St. John’s Lutheran School in rural Victor and was a graduate of Victor High School with the class of 1941. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member.

On November 26, 1950, Harold was married to Cheribel Dillin in Marengo, IA. Their marriage was blessed with three children: John, Barbara and Thomas. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm southeast of Victor and moved to Victor in 1997.

Harold lived a strong Christian faith and was a true gentleman. He was a dedicated farmer and a steward of the land. In his early years, he played baseball, and then played golf until he was 97 years old. He had two holes-in-one and shot his age twice. He was a life-long Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs fan. Harold enjoyed fishing and was a skilled dartball player. He was proud to have owned and operated a Century Farm. Above all, he considered his family to be his greatest achievement.

Harold is survived by his children, John (Karen) Schmidt of Lincoln, NE, Barb (Randy) Haman of Marengo, IA, and Tom (Judy) Schmidt of Peoria, IL; grandchildren, Cari Chittick, Sarah (Phil) Cooling, Joel (Amanda) Schmidt, Paul (Chellsey) Schmidt, David Schmidt, Kyle Schmidt, and Mark Schmidt; and great-grandchildren, Brock and Logan Cooling, and Hannah and Niall Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Cheribel Schmidt in 2009; his sister, Lois Frescoln; and brother, Merlin Schmidt.
