24 October 1973 - The Tipton Conservative

Funeral services for Peter Shima, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Shima, Marengo, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Shima, Tipton, were held in St. Patrick's church, Marengo, Oct. 14.

He was killed when a pickup truck he was driving overturned in a pasture on the Shima farm Oct. 11. According to a story in the Marengo Pioneer Republican, Peter and a classmate had come home from the Iowa Valley community school and he had received permission to drive a family truck on a pasture path as he had done numerous times before. Peter had been driving the truck doing family chores on the farm for nearly 2 years, his father told the paper.

The boys were apparently returning home when a drawbar on the front of the truck, used for pulling it behind a tractor, may have become imbedded in the ground and caused the truck to turn on its side.

Peter was caught between the door and the left side of the truck when it tipped over.

The son of Edward and Nell Neill Shima, he was born March 26, 1963 and had always lived on the family farm near Marengo. He played trombone in the elementary school band and had won several wrestling medals.

He is survived by his parents, 3 brothers, Mark, 18, a student at the University of Iowa, Iowa City; Lamar, 14 and Tom, 9; 2 sisters, Anna, 16 and Jean, 13, all at home; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. C. L. Neill, Eklisville, Miss; and his paternal grandparents, the Frank Shimas. He is also survived by a paternal uncle, Dan Shima, Eldridge and an aunt, Mrs. Robert Tucker, Cedar Rapids.
