Howard E. Brown, 81, of 1652 Fifth St. NW, died at home Sunday, June 19, 2005, after a short illness.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, by the Rev. Steven Rosonke. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and a vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Turner West Funeral Home, where friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of 61 years; four sons, Edward (Sharon), Thomas (Sharon Mow), Greg (Ginger) and Mark (Kari) Brown, all of Cedar Rapids; nine daughters, Mary Anne White of Cape Coral, Fla., Joyce (John) Huelsenbeck, Cecilia Regan, Connie Schutzman, Pamela Brown and Michele (Paul) Kaplan, all of Cedar Rapids, Sharon (Russ) Smith of Hiawatha, Judy (Ralph) Lundquist of Solon and Theresa (Doug) Kaestner of Marion; a sister, Betty (John) VanDee of Vining; three brothers, Vernon Garringer of Parnell and James (Jeanne) Garringer and Bill (Darlyn) Garringer, both of Williamsburg; a sister-in-law, Linda Garringer of Williamsburg; 35 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Howard was preceded in death by his grandparents, Austin and Sarah Brown; his mother and stepfather, Esta and Carl Garringer; a brother, Ralph Garringer; two stepbrothers, Keith and Orville Garringer; two sons-in-law, Larry Michael Regan and Dennis D. Lathrop; and a grandson, Jay White.
Howard was born Feb. 15, 1924, in Wellman, and married Mary VanDee on Aug. 23, 1943, in Parnell. He was a mechanic for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools for many years, retiring in 1986.
Howard was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and was an Honor Guard for the Pilgrim Virgin Statue for over 25 years. He was also a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy and St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
