OBITUARY, Marengo Republican, September 4, 1918:

"DEATH CALLS MRS. M.A. SIMMONS

RESIDENT OF MARENGO SINCE 1872 DIES AT THE AGE OF 72 YEARS.

Mrs. M.A. Simmons died at her home in Marengo Sunday, September 1, after a residence of 47 years in this city.

Funeral services were held from St. Patrick's Catholic church, Tuesday morning, September 3d, conducted by Father W.E. Carroll.

Mary Virginia Agnew was born at Emmetsburg, Maryland, November 1846.

She was united in marriage to M.A. Simmons in Iowa City, July 2, 1866.

To this union twelve children were born, nine of whom with the husband survive.

In addition to 21 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren the following children are left to mourn their loss: Kate, Mrs. E.E. Brunelle, Anoka, Minn., Carl J. Simmons, Williamsburg; Laura, Mrs. Arthur Brown, Theresa Simmons, Ray A. Simmons, Mark Simmons, Paul Simmons, Marengo; Mildred, Mrs. W.P. Johnson, Davenport; Myrene, Mrs. C.M. Shedenhelm, Garwin, Iowa.

Maude, Mrs. W.C. Harris, of Williamsburg, and two other children who died in infancy preceded their mother to the Spirit World.

Mrs. Simmons was a good wife, a faithful mother and a kind neighbor who will be sadly missed from the circle which in life knew and loved her for her sterling traits of character."
