John T. Werner was born August 8, 1908 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of John W. and Emilie Ristau Werner. He was baptized September 20, 1908 and confirmed April 9, 1922. He attended York Center and Immanuel Lutheran School near Williamsburg. John was united in marriage to Olga Heitshusen on October 13, 1938 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. To this marriage they were blessed with four children David, Marilyn, George and John F.. Olga died February 27, 1956. In 1970 John F. was killed serving his country in the Vietnam War. A number of years later John married Gertrude Greer Ove on July 15, 1972 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Gertrude died October 27, 1997. John was a life long farmer in the Williamsburg community, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the Williamsburg Kiwanis Club, Farm Bureau and had served as a 4-H leader. John died Thursday, February 24, 2005 at the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg after brief illness at the age of 96 years, 6 months and 16 days. He is survived by two sons: David (Lois) Werner and George (Marlene) Werner all of Williamsburg; a daughter: Marilyn (Earl) Wichmann of Homestead; three stepchildren: Paul (Judy) Ove of Arnold CA and; Lavonne (Ted) Staub Walters of Arnold, CA and David (Robin) Ove of Felton, CA and their families; nine grandchildren: Paul (Cari) Werner, Brenda Werner, Beth Ann Werner, Rachel (Paul) Hottel, Becky (Casey) Fluegge, Debra (John) Schlaefke, Nathan (Raffi) Wichmann, Todd (Paula) Werner and Rochelle (Jeff) Wolfe and ten great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, a son John F. Werner, two brothers: Carl and Arnold and two stepsons: Bernard and Ed Ove. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 28, 2005 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, February 27, 2005 from 4 to 8:00 p.m. at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the Lutheran Interparish School, the Williamsburg Public Library or the Kiwanis Scholarship Fund.
