MARGARET REFER MCHARG

Margaret Refer McHarg, 94, entered Eternal Rest with her Lord and Savior, Friday, December 29, 2006. Services: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at Concordia Lutheran Church, 4210 Johnson Avenue NW, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Jerry Doelinger. There will be a lunch following at the church fellowship hall. Visitation: 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, January 1, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: 2:00 p.m. Victor Memorial Cemetery, with a reception following at St. James Lutheran Church in Victor.

Survivors include her daughter, Jane, with whom she resided at the time of her passing.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Clara (Judge) Newton, Dora (Louis) Schwertfeger, Laura (Skinny) Schlesselman; and three brothers, Jack (Camilla "Bob"), Carl (Mary) and Clifford "Kip" (Elnora).

Margaret was born July 14, 1912, near Victor, Iowa, to John Dietrich Refer and Margaret Sophia Smith Refer. She was a member in God's Kingdom of Grace through Holy Baptism and confirmation in the Lutheran faith at St. James Lutheran Church, Victor. Margaret graduated from Victor High School in 1930. On April 13, 1941, she married George Edward McHarg. They resided in Fond-du-Lac, Wisconsin. To this union was born one daughter, Margaret Jane.

The family returned to Iowa before Jane's second birthday. George died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack when Jane was only six and a half years old. Margaret worked outside the home in addition to being the sole parent of Jane, managed the family farms, and cared for her own mother.

Margaret was the BEST Mother and friend to her daughter. She enjoyed traveling and musical events while her health permitted. Margaret loved playing bridge and was especially adept at defensive strategy with a penchant for zealous bidding!

She will be deeply missed. The earthy void left by her passing is transcended by the confident reassurance that she is at everlasting peace with our Lord and Risen Savior.
