Cedar Rapids

Lucille Rank graced this Earth from March 18, 1928, to Aug. 16, 2016. She died peacefully, in her home.

She has gone Home to be with her Mama and Pa, Helene and George, her sisters Dorothea and Maria, brothers Bill, Walter, Louis and Fred, husband Bernard, and other beloved family.

Lucille was gentle, kind, patient, generous, tender-hearted, forgiving, charming, and playful. She was a living example of doing unto others.

She was a devoted mother and Oma to her daughters, Gail and Della, and her grandson, David.

Lucille most loved being with her family. She loved without condition and asked of us only that we be happy. She was the light of her daughter Della's life, who had the honor and pleasure of caring for Lucille during her later years.

She loved to laugh. She loved having her back scratched. She loved music and dancing, going for walks and being outdoors in the fresh air. She loved visiting friends, having parties and having fun. Earlier in life, she enjoyed driving, and later she liked having her backseat "nest" during car rides. She loved watching animals, and children playing, and had been a babysitter to several children she adored. She loved pizza.

Born Lucille Anne Hess in East Amana, after her marriage she lived most of her life in Cedar Rapids.

One of Lucille's greatest joys was helping raise her grandson for his first nine years in Fairport, N.Y., and later being his companion through his high school years when her daughter Gail's family moved to Georgia, where Lucille also delighted in feeding the goats who lived next door.

Lucille's approach to life, and her frequent saying, was "let's play it by ear."

Her family thanks Hospice of Mercy staff and volunteers. Lucille enjoyed dancing in her chair to the piano music at Hospice House, and the courtyard waterfall fountain.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

A memorial fund has been established. Notes of your memories with Lucille would be especially appreciated.
