KALONA- Jean Kessel was born September 4, 1928 in Linwood, California the daughter of Harold and Lena (Lewis) Bottger.

Jean grew up in the Ollie and Richland area. Graduated from Ollie High School.

On May 9, 1946 Jean was united in marriage to Harold Robert Kessel in Pleasant Plain, Iowa. They lived in Ollie, Kinross, North Enlgish and Joetown until moving to Kalona in 1992.

Jean was worked at the Canterbury Inn for 15 years along with helping on the farm. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond.

She enjoyed spending time with family, riding horses and her mule, rodeo’s, country music, spending time with her dogs, cooking, sewing, going to the casino, traveling with Harold in their motorhome.

Jean passed away Tuesday, August, 2, 2016 at Parkview Manor at the age of 87 years.

Jean is survived by three children: Carol (Jim) Wilson, Connie Kessel, and Nancy (Jim) Townsend all of Wellman; 6 grandchildren; Angie Griffin, Todd Townsend, Melissa Brunk, Scott Griffin, Jamie Townsend and Amy Mattes; 8 great grandchildren; a sister Beverly Ann Able in Ollie.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2013; a sister Ruth Bennison and a infant grandson.

Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, August 6, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wellman, Iowa. Rev. David Brownfield PhD will officiate.

Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, August 5, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona.

A memorial fund as been established for Hospice of Compassus of Cedar Rapids and WCDC, Inc. in Washington.
