Funeral service for Charlie J. Boerjan, 82, Marengo, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. He died Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Marengo Memorial Hospital.

The Rev. David Wilkening will officiate at the service.

Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors.

A memorial fund has been established.

Charlie Joseph Boerjan was born June 8, 1934, in Osage, the son of Frank and Suzanna Arickx Boerjan. He graduated from Osage High School, where he was a state champion wrestler in 1950 at 105 pounds and runner-up in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he wrestled for two years before boarding the USS Whitehurst as a radioman. He was stationed in Japan, Guam and Hawaii. Returning from the Navy, he attended the University of Iowa. In 1962, he started working for the Iowa City U.S. Postal Service as a carrier, retiring in 2000.

He was a member of the Marengo American Legion. He was co-founder and a past president of the Iowa Hawkeye Area Wrestling Club, was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and a hobby farmer, raising horses, cattle and sheep. He especially loved his time spent with family and get-togethers.

Boerjan is survived by his wife of 23 years, Connie; six children, Mike Boerjan, North Liberty; Mark Boerjan (Cheryl Fischer), West Branch; Kim Loffer, Marengo; Suzette Ehrle, Cedar Rapids; Darren (Michelle Hallerud) Slaymaker, Urbana, and Jon Smith, Ankeny; eight grandchildren, Melissa (Pat) Ingle, Matthew (Lindsey) Boerjan, Micah Boerjan, David and Sarah Fischer, Bryce Loffer, Ella and Hayden Ehrle; three great-grandchildren, Addison and Tanner Boerjan and Lana Ingle; one sister, Patricia Schlindwein, Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Beth, and two brothers, August and James.
