Mac Sayers, 88

Funeral service for Mac J. Sayers, 88, Marengo, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 22, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Marengo. He died Friday, June 19, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo.

Memorials may be made to Essence of Life Hospice, Marengo Memorial Hospital or Iowa Public Television.

Mac J. Sayers was born April 22, 1927, the son of James William and Mabelle Merle Rogers Sayers, on the family farm in Iowa County. He attended Iowa County schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1945. He was a long-time farmer in the Iowa County area.

He married Darlene Eckert Sept. 14, 1948, in Kansas City, Mo. She died July 6, 1987.

He married Elsie Hahn Hollrah Aug. 3, 1991, at Middle Amana.

He loved spending time with his family, especially outdoors on top of the hill, “Buffalo Acres,” with roaring bonfires. He liked to play cards and dominoes. He also spent many hours tending his buffalo and never missed a chance to go mushroom hunting. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and dancing. He also served as a township trustee for a number of years.

Sayers is survived by his wife, Elsie; his children, Vicki (Bob) Davidson, Amana; James “Jim” (Vanessa) Sayers, Belle Plaine; Carla (Chuck) Myers, Hartford; Adda (TJ) Sayers, Urbandale; Susan Bell, Marengo; Nancee (Dale) Herman, Atkins, and Justin (Sheila) Sayers, Marengo; step-children, Cindy (Kevin) Walter, Dan (Chris) Hollrah and J. Brian Hollrah; 16 grandchildren, Jennifer (Chad) Knudtson, Jessica (Steve) Cerveny, Benjamin Sayers, Andrew Sayers, Chantel Teachout, Canada (Matt) Snyder, Carissa (Tony) Nusbaum, Shayla Bell, Spencer Bell, Senra (Nathan) Whitters, Sara Herman, Nolan Herman, Nathan Herman, Nevin Herman, Stella Sayers and William Sayers; 10 great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren, Lacie (Tim) Blattner, Abbie (Taylor) Maxfield, Sara Hollrah, Andrea Hollrah, Rebecca (Kyle) Campbell and Anneli Hollrah; a step-great-grandchild and one sister, Sally Anderson, Santa Barbara, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Darlene; his parents; one son, Dudley; one daughter, Paula, and three brothers, William, James and Dean “Bud” Sayers.
