Marjorie Johnston, 93

Celebration of life service for Marjorie M. Johnston, 93, North English, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 8, at the North English Christian Church. She died Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.

The Rev. Luke Caster officiated at the service.

Burial was in the North English Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the North English Christian Church or the North English Library.

Marjorie Maxine Johnston was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Keokuk County, the daughter of Otto Earl and Malinda Effie (Norman) Lockridge. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1939. She also graduated from William Penn College where she received a bachelor of arts degree in Education and attended two years of graduate school at the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa.

She married Wade Dean Johnston Dec. 20, 1941, in Kirksville, Mo. Together the farmed in the White Pigeon and Green Valley areas before moving to town in 1954. They spent 12 years wintering in Texas.

She taught in a one-room school, Webster and South English and was an elementary teacher for the English Valleys Community Schools for 35 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of the North English Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school and served as a greeter and chairman on the church board. She was a past member of the CWF and the Rebekah Lodge.

She enjoyed her family, quilting, camping, birds and flowers. She was an avid reader and loved teaching children to read.

Johnston is survived by her children, Margo Redlinger, Solon; Ronald Johnston, Atlanta, Ga.; Francis (Joan) Johnston, Washington, and Pamela Thodos, Washington; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 14 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren and one sister, Naomi Morrison, North English.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade; her parents; two sisters, Mae Westfall Jones and Ethal McArtor; a half-brother, Orville Lockridge, and two grandchildren, Michael Johnston and Philip Knebel.
