Doris Irene (Owen) Seydel, 92, formerly of Readlyn, passed away in St. Anthony's Hospital in Carroll, IA, on March 20, 2015.

Doris was born on May 19, 1922, the daughter of Richard and Rose (Grauer) Owen, on the family farmstead in rural North English. She attended Gehry rural school through the 8th grade and graduated from North English High School in 1939.

She continued her education in the school of nursing at the University of Iowa, graduating with her RN degree in 1945. After graduation, she worked one summer in the hospital in Muscatine, 3 years in the SUI Hospital, and one year in the hospital in Ames. While working as the supervisor in the Isolation Ward at SUI, she met Hartley C. (Sy) Seydel, who had been admitted to her unit upon his return from service during World War II.

Doris and Sy were united in marriage on August 9, 1946, and moved to Iowa City, back to North English, and then to Ames, and in 1951, moved to their permanent place of residence in Readlyn, Iowa, where they built a home together.

When the couple began their family, Doris was a stay-at-home mother until 1966, when she was employed as an RN in the Sumner Hospital. In 1968, Doris became the School Nurse for the Wapsie Valley School District, providing nursing care for thousands of students before retiring in 1990 after 22 ½ years.

Hartley passed away on April 4, 1979, and Doris continued to live at home until June 2013 when she was admitted to Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly. In January 2014, she moved to Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids where she could be closer to her son, Rick.

Family was very dear to Doris and she enjoyed spending as much time as she could with her children and their families, often traveling across the country to spend a couple of weeks with them. Doris was very active in the Readlyn VFW Auxiliary, holding the office of secretary for many, many years. She also participated in the Readlyn Commercial Club, the Evening Circle at Zion Lutheran Church, the Merry Elders, and was honored to be selected as the Readlyn Grump in 1998.

She enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening, and playing cards, belonging to 3 bridge clubs. Doris continued to volunteer in the Readlyn Elementary School,

Strong-willed would be the best term that described her. Doris was a very independent person. She never liked to ask anyone for any help, as she was concerned she would put someone out. She was always willing to help anyone at any given time, never wanting the favor returned.

Doris is survived by her 4 children: son Jerry and his wife Anne of Bakersfield, CA; daughter Vicki and her husband Geoff of El Paso, TX; son Rick and his wife Macheal of Coon Rapids; and son Dave and his wife Paula of Carrizo Springs, TX; grandchildren: Jennifer (Gannon) Hackworth and her husband DeMond of San Antonio, TX; Justin Gannon and his wife Jazmin of Austin, TX; Andy Seydel and his wife April of West Des Moines; Nic Seydel of Ames; and Robert Campos of Westmont, IL; great-grandchildren: Ethan Seydel, Ebon Seydel, Mario Campos, Yesmina Campos, and Lysandra Aranda; her dear sisters-in-law Lila Miller of Georgetown, TX, and Kathryn (Junie) Seydel of Iowa City; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many friends and neighbors who knew and loved her.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Hartley, sister Jean Coffman, parents Richard and Rose Owen, brother-in-law Donald Seydel, father-in-law LeRoy Seydel, and mother-in-law Viola Sorensen.
