Harlan Schwarting, 68

Celebration of life service for Harlan A. Schwarting, 68, Williamsburg, was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. He died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, surrounded by his family at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City.

The Rev. Gary Sears and the Rev. Brent Hartwig officiated at the service.

Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy.

A general memorial fund has been established.

Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg, was in charge of arrangements.

Harlan Arthur Schwarting was born July 9, 1946, in Williamsburg, the son of Clifford Arthur and Bess Marie (Jordt) Schwarting. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy, and graduated from Williamsburg High School. He served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970 and in the Army Reserves for six years.

He married Leota Irene Hamer Sept. 21, 1968, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. He was a truck driver for Ron Hummer Trucking for over 30 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy, and the Oxford American Legion. He loved to golf and spend time with his family.

Schwarting is survived by his wife, Leota, Williamsburg; one son, Art (Denise) Schwarting, Iowa City; one daughter, Becky (Tony) Byrd, Oxford; five grandchildren, Ronni, Seth, Christian and Kendra Schwarting, Iowa City, and Kelsey Schwarting, Oxford; two brothers, Gary (Leanne) Schwarting, Oxford, and Allen (Linda) Schwarting, Williamsburg; an uncle, Duane (Darlene) Schwarting, Homestead; special friends, Jim and Diann Gowin, Williamsburg, and Randy and Linda Kramer, South Dakota; one sister-in-law, Fran (Ken) DeMarce, Cedar Rapids; two brothers-in-law, Richard Hamer, Marion, and Larry Hamer, Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Ron Hamer and Ray Hamer, and mother-in-law, Lorine Hamer.
