Shirley Mort, 84, Marengo, died Friday, May 30, 2014, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, following an extended illness. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be made to Rose Haven Nursing Home.

Shirley Mort was born April 2, 1930, in Marengo, the daughter of Benjamin and Edna Randolph Tompkins. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1948.

She married Richard L. Mort in Portsmouth, Va., and followed her husband while he served his country, living in several places and working many jobs, all while raising her family.

Her husband died in 1974. She returned to Marengo in 2010. Due to failing health, she had recently relocated to Rose Haven Nursing Home.

Mort is survived by one daughter, Melissa (Dennis) Murphy, Vancleave, Miss.; two grandsons, Justin N. Murphy, Kenner, La., and Joshua M. (Michelle) Murphy, Ocean Springs, Miss.; three great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Matthew and Karley Murphy, Ocean Springs, and one sister, Barbara Tompkins Wilkinson, Marengo.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard J. Mort; one sister, Marjorie Tompkins Larson, and brothers-in-law, John Wilkinson and Al Larson.
