Funeral service for Richard L. “Dick” Edwards, 88, Marengo, was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. He went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2014.

The Rev. Andrew Gray officiated at the service.

Burial was in the Koszta Cemetery, rural Marengo, with military honors.

A memorial fund has been established.

Richard L. Edwards was born April 27, 1926, in Marengo, the son of James Blaine Edwards and H. Ruth Merritt Edwards. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1944 and attended Iowa State University, Ames. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for three years, stationed in Farragut, Idaho.

He married Wanda Ardis Reinhardt Nov. 10. 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grant Center. He farmed and was an insurance agent with Lenox Mutual Insurance Association for 35 years, retiring in 1998. He also served as secretary of that association for 27 years.

He was a member of Marengo American Legion Post 76. He belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, where he served as an elder for many years and was a member of the Men’s Fellowship. He loved his farming and enjoyed being outdoors.

While in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Cabot in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. The “A” Division held yearly reunions for 21 years. The Edwards hosted reunions in Cedar Rapids and in Mount Horeb, Wis., and co-hosted with Ray and Neva Feather in Colorado Springs, Colo. He always enjoyed these events and looked forward to greeting his friends every year.

Edwards is survived by his wife, Wanda; four nephews, Philip Sencer, Chicago, Ill.; George Edwards, Minneapolis, Minn.; Gary Edwards, Marengo, and Larry Edwards, Panama City, Fla.; nieces, Linda Edwards, Coralville; Jeanne Jurgens, Davenport, and Carol Graham, Davenport; one brother-in-law, Wayne Reinhardt and wife Nadine, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and their children, Susan, Eric, Lisa and Kurt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; two brothers, George and Roy, and three sisters-in-law, Aileen and Vera Edwards and Norma Sencer.
