Memorial service for Leona B. Baack, 96, Marengo, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. She died Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

The Rev. Andrew Gray officiated at the service.

Inurnment was in the Marengo Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established.

Leona Bertha Anna Baack was born Dec. 28, 1917, in Oxford, the daughter of Henry and Gesine Brockshus Baack. She attended York Township #1 School and Immanuel Lutheran School, rural Williamsburg. She also took correspondence classes in textiles and accounting.

She was employed for many years with the Heyman Company, selling fabrics and notions to local fabric stores. She received salesman of the year several times. She also worked for Schanz Furniture, Amana, for several years.

She enjoyed crafts and gardening and was known for her baking and canning abilities. She enjoyed spending time with her family and cared for her parents whenever they were in need. While she never had children of her own, she especially cherished her nieces and nephews and her extended family.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, and the Ladies Aid.

Baack is survived by one nephew, Dennis Baack, Marion; three nieces, Donna (David) Krebs, Webster; Darla (James Hilton) Baack, Jacksonville, Ore.; RoxAnn (Robert) Hiam, Castle Rock, Colo.; great-nieces and great-nephews, Don Sawin, Jenny (Dean) Hahn, Eric Krebs, Paul Hiam and Carissa Hiam, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Zane, Zoe, Cera and Eden Hahn.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers and their wives, Walter and Margaret Baack and Marvin and Shirley Baack.
