Judith (Judy) Ann Sloan, 69, of Brooklyn and formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Brooklyn Community Estates.

A funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, May 12, 2014, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor, with Rev Brian Shepley officiating.

Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery following the funeral services on Monday.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 4 – 7, on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at the Smith funeral Home in Victor. A rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Memorials may be directed to the Judith Sloan Memorial Fund and sent in care to the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 485, Victor, Iowa 52347.

Judith was born on April 24, 1945, the daughter of Leonard and Marguerite Fitzgerald Thys in Belle Plaine, Iowa. She attended St. John's Catholic School, and graduated from HLV High School with the class of 1963. She continued her education at Kirkwood Community College earning an AA degree in human services. Judy graduated from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Magna Cum Laude with a BA in social work.

She was united in marriage to Terry Sloan in 1963, and to this union was born one daughter, Annette. The couple later divorced.

She was employed by HACAP in Cedar Rapids, then Families, Inc. in West Branch, until her retirement due to health concerns. Judy also held positions of conducting workshops in Iowa as a child abuse consultant for the State Technical Assistance Training Team in Des Moines. In 1985, Judy received the State of Iowa Governor's volunteer award for her work at the Department of Correctional Services.

Judy was active in organizing social events for the residents of her community.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards, dominos and putting together puzzles. Judy's family and friends were very important to her and she will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish Judy's memory are her daughter; Annette (Jeff) Lockwood of Falling Waters, West Virginia; sisters, Joan (Ed) Doran of Victor, Kathy (Bill) Rashid of Merrit Island, Florida; brothers, Jim (RuthAnn) Thys of Victor and Ray (Pam) Thys of Marion.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lu Ann Thys and nephew, Doug Doran.
