ERMA CLAEYS

Erma Claeys, age 90, of Victor died Tuesday, June 16, 1987 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She had been a resident of Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn since April 1, 1985.

She was the daughter of Louis and Stephanie Marten Van Hamme, and was born on August 27, 1896, at Oost Eeklo, Belgium, and came to the United States in October of 1917.

On August 22, 1918, she was married to August Claeys, in Victor. He died in 1969. The family farmed all of their married life in the Victor area.

She has been a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Irene) Beran of Victor, two sons, August Claeys of Victor, and Richard Claeys of Belle Plaine, 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, 6 brothers, 3 sisters, one grandson and one great-grandson.

A Rosary was recited Thursday, 8:00 p.m. at the McAninch-Fremming Funeral Home. Funeral Mass of the Christian Burial was held 11:00 a.m., Friday, at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Victor, with Rev. Eugene Hoenig of St. Bridget's officiating. Organist was Kathy Lynch of Victor, music was provided by the St. Bridget's Choir, and a duet was sung by Donna Verconde of Brooklyn and Dennis Van Hamme of Grinnell. In charge of flowers were Robert and Ruth Wagner of Brooklyn.

Pallbearers were David Beran of Victor, Kenneth Beran of Derby, Kansas, David Claeys of Victor, Dennis Claeys of Victor, Ricky Claeys of Marengo and Martin Thorson of Cedar Rapids. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Victor. The family received friends at a lunch at St. Bridget's Catholic Church following the service.

The McAninch-Fremming Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
