CLARA HUNZELMAN HAWKINS

Clara Hunzelman Hawkins, age 85, of Ladora died Saturday, July 29, 1989, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo.

She was the daughter of J.B. and Lillie Mae Rumple Zimmerman and was born on November 13, 1903, at Genoa Bluff, south of Ladora. She attended school at rural schools south of Ladora.

On September 15, 1920, she was married to John H. Hunzelman at Ladora. He died Feb. 26, 1946. In 1954 she was married to Hubert B. Hawkins at Ladora. He died Oct. 5, 1963. She lived in Ladora all of her life. She had worked at Sweezey's Drug Store and the Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo. In 1954 following her marriage to Hubert the couple farmed east of Ladora. In 1963 when her husband died she moved back to Ladora. In January, 1988, her health failed and she became a resident of the Rose Haven Nursing Home at Marengo.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ladora.

She is survived by two daughters, Verna J. Hunzelman of Williamsburg and Mrs. Harold (Betty K.) Nail of rural Marengo; one son, Lester G. Hunzelman of Wahkon, Minn., one step-son, Leon Hawkins of Ladora; one sister, Verna Guehrn of Marengo; six grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 18 step-great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren and 7 step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one brother, Elmer; four sisters, Edith, Hazel, Mary, and Opal; a step-daughter, Sara Woodley; and a step-son, Robert M. Hawkins.

Funeral Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the McAninch-Fremming Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Barrick of the United Methodist Church of Ladora officiating. Organist was Glendora Vincent, Ladora.

The Pall Bearers were Clayton Dietrich of Ladora, Jerry Tanner of Ladora, Everett Hunzelman of Iowa City. Wayne Shaull, Richard Hawkins, and Harold Tanner all of Ladora. In charge of flowers were Floris Swender and Hazel Tanner both of Ladora.

Burial was in the Ohio Cemetery in Iowa County, south of Ladora. A memorial fund has been established. The McAninch-Fremming Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
