Albert VanThournout Sr., 79

Funeral service for Albert T. VanThournout Sr., 79, Victor, was held Monday, April 14, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Belle Plaine. He died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo, following a short battle with cancer.

Deacon Joe Behounek officiated at the service.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Victor, with military rites by the Victor American Legion. Casket bearers were Mike Miner, Matt Miner, Phillip Roudabush, Josh VanThournout, Craig VanThournout and Brian VanThournout.

A memorial fund has been established.

Hrabak Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements.

Albert T. VanThournout was born Sept. 4, 1934, in rural Victor, the son of August and Florence VanWaus VanThournout. He attended Hartford Number 8 country school. He helped his father with farming until he entered the Navy in 1954. He attained the rank of TM3 and served on the USS Tingey during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1958.

He married Elaine Novak Jan. 9, 1960, at St. Michael’s Church. They farmed near Brooklyn and Belle Plaine and then moved to the family farm near Victor in 1968. He worked at sale barns and most recently at Marengo Publishing Corporation, retiring June 1, 2007.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Church and the Victor American Legion. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening, dancing, reading and playing cards.

VanThournout is survived by his wife, Elaine; one daughter, Annette VanThournout, Parnell; one son, Albert Jr., Marengo; sisters, Teresa (Dean) Roudabush, Atkins, and Louise (Don) Miner, Luzerne; brothers, Julian (Ruth Ann), Texas; Mike, Van Horne, and Chuck (Kathy), Hartwick.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; his parents; one brother, Robert, and infant twin sisters, Mary and Margaret.
