Thomas Crosby, 74

Memorial service for Thomas L. Crosby, 74, Williamsburg, was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City. He died peacefully Thursday, March 6, 2014, at his home.

The Rev. Gary Beckman officiated at the service. Military honors were conducted at the church following the service.

Inurnment was in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo.

Memorials may be made to the pro-life organization of the donor’s choice or Essence of Life Hospice, Amana.

Thomas Leo Crosby was born July 12, 1939, in Marshalltown, the son of James Harold and Anna Belle Wheelock Crosby. He graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1957 and received his bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

He married Ellen Anita Giles Nov. 3, 1962, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Marshalltown. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years and was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and Seattle, Wash.

He was employed with Boeing from 1966 to 1968, then worked for Amana Refrigeration from 1968 to 2000. He worked with several veterans service organizations and most recently was the director of the Iowa County Veterans Service.

He sang with The Believers for many years and also with the St. Wenceslaus choir.

He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City; the Knights of Columbus, the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, the American Legion and numerous other veterans organizations.

The couple shared their love with countless foster children over the years. They were instrumental in reuniting Vietnamese refugee families whose children were in Tom and Anita’s care through the unacommpanied minors program.

Crosby is survived by his wife, Anita; seven children, Timothy (Rennie) Crosby, Austin, Texas; Matthew (Carrie) Crosby, Riverside; Benjamin (Suzi) Crosby, Poulsbo, Wash.; Erin (Nelson) Farragut, Stevensville, Mich.; Andrew Crosby, New Orleans, La.; Christopher Crosby, Williamsburg, and Elizabeth Crosby, Iowa City; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three siblings, Jim (Virginia) Crosby, Kansas City, Mo.; Doug (Carole) Crosby, Peosta, and Marta (Joe) Murphy, Boston, Mass.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
