Vadena Fisher, 91

Memorial service for Vadena R. Fisher, 91, Marengo, formerly of Brooklyn, was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at Smith Funeral Home, Victor. She died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Inurnment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Central City.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Vadena R. Fisher was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Central City, the daughter of Moses and Ida Harnish Beasley. She was raised in Central City and graduated from Central City High School in 1939.

In 1942, she enrolled in the Cadet Corps Nursing School at Jane Lamb Hospital, Clinton, and later received a nursing degree there. During World War II, she served her country in a naval hospital in Chelsea, Mass. Following the war, she worked for the VA Hospital in Iowa City. In addition to her degree as a registered nurse, she also obtained a degree in religious studies in Anderson, Ind.

She married Virgil C. Fisher Nov. 30, 1952. The couple lived in various communities in Linn County. Following her husband’s death in 1958, she lived in Indianapolis, Ind., and later returned to Central City to care for her parents and work at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

In 1973, she moved to Holiday Lake near Brooklyn and worked at Grinnell General Hospital. From 1974 to 1985, she traveled to hospitals in Topeka, Kan.; Des Moines, and Portland, Ore. Following her retirement, she resided at Holiday Lake in an earth home that she built.

She enjoyed gardening, woodworking, cutting firewood and spending time on her computer. She was a past member of the Holiday Lake Maintenance Board and the Deborah Rebekah Lodge.

Fisher is survived by one sister, Wilma Hart, Brooklyn; one brother, Thomas Beasley, Hopewell, Va., and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Raymond Beasley, and two sisters, Myrtle Hull and Marian Freeman.
