Paulette S. Bates, 58, Fort Worth, Texas, formerly of Williamsburg, died Nov. 22, 2013, at Harris Hospital, Fort Worth, following a brief illness. Private funeral services were held in Hurst, Texas, and a family memorial was conducted Dec. 1 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, by the Rev. Richard Meyer.

Paulette Sue Bates was born Feb. 25, 1955, in Williamsburg, the daughter of Mervin and Darlene [Schmidt] Von Ahsen. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1973.

She married Tom Bates Dec. 5, 1981, in Omaha, Neb. The couple made their home in Omaha, Des Moines and Minneapolis before settling in the Fort Worth area.

She worked in the corporate purchasing department of Michael’s Craft Stores. Previously, she had worked many years for Dunn and Bradstreet, both in Minnesota and Texas.

She enjoyed time with family and friends, traveling, golfing and was an avid follower of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs.

Bates is survived by her husband, Tom Bates, Watauga, Texas; her mother, Darlene Von Ahsen, Amana; two sisters, Connie Mekus, Des Moines, and Sheryl Boughton (David), Williamsburg; one brother, Neal Von Ahsen, Des Moines; one sister-in-law, Laura Yorburg (Bob), Yorktown Heights, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alma and Wendell Bates, and one brother-in-law, John (Jack) Mekus.
