Roger Herring, 74

Roger Allen Herring, 74, of Williamsburg, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

A Celebration of Life Service was Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg, with the Rev. Kirk Statler officiating. Burial was at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Casket bearers are Darryl Herring, Ron Hummer, Tom Wardenburg, Wayne Ebel, David Schwarting, Phillip Wardenburg, Bruce Wardenburg and Neal Schwarting. Honorary Casket Bearers: Alex and Andrew Gragg, and Grace and Olivia Herring.

Vocalist was Neil Schwarting, and music selections were “Daddy’s Hands,” “In the Garden” and “Be Not Afraid.”

Roger Allen Herring was born Feb. 16, 1939, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Alexander and Minnie (Conklin) Herring. He grew up in West Liberty and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1957. On Nov. 26, 1960, he married Marylene Wardenburg in Boonsville, Mo., and moved to Iowa County where they raised their family. They loved each other faithfully for 43 years until her passing in 2003. Roger then married Sharon Houser, and they later divorced.

Roger was employed several years for Farm Service and then did carpenter work for Swartzendruber Lumber. He worked over 25 years as an over-the-road truck driver for R.H. Hummer, Jr. Trucking out of Williamsburg. He loved trucking and his trucking family and enjoyed sharing stories of his travels. Roger like woodworking, building things and playing cards (especially sheepshead), but his passion was spending time with his grandchildren and attending their activities and events. Each of them brought a special light to his life.

Roger died on He is survived by his children: Darryl (Leslie) Herring, Hendersonville, Tenn., Michael (Tina) Herring, Palo, and Carmen (Denny) Van Dee, Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Gragg and Grace and Olivia Herring; five step grandchildren, Niki (Vince) Martinson, Whitney and Chase Van Dee and Zachary and Nick Valdez; a step great grandchild, Clayton Martinson.

He was preceded by his parents; wife Marylene; an infant brother; and two sisters, Teresa Schwarting and Rosemary Ebel.
