George Meeks, 86

George W. Meeks, 86, of Hartwick, Iowa, died on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A private family graveside service was Thursday, Oct. 3, at Hartwick Cemetery with the Rev. Keith Morrison, Grinnell regional hospice chaplain, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to Grinnell Regional Hospice, 106 Fourth Avenue, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.smithfh.com.

George William Meeks was born on Nov. 4, 1926, in Chelsea to Jacob and Anna (Hayek) Meeks. He was raised on the family farm near Hartwick and graduated from Hartwick High School in 1943.

He honorably served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1950 until 1957. He returned home to work on the family farm.

On December 4, 1965, he was united in marriage with Linda Pickering. The couple made their home on the family farm near Hartwick.

George’s life was farming and family. He enjoyed collecting John Deere toy tractors. He was a member of the Brooklyn American Legion, served on the Belle Plaine Community School Board for 12 years and was a member of the Optimist Club in Belle Plaine.

George is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda Meeks of Hartwick; two daughters, Tami Mora, Cedar Rapids, and Christine Meeks, Hartwick; two sons, Stacy (Kim Osipchack) Meeks and Jason (Jocelyn) Meeks, both of Chelsea; four grandchildren, Jessica Mora of Cedar Rapids, Savanah Meeks and Tanner Meeks, all Chelsea, and Chloe Meeks, Newhall; and sisters, Edna Uchytil and Barbara Kann.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and Richard Meeks; and a sister, Helen Carlson.
