South English- Leon Elvin Blaylock, was born February 23, 1926, near South English, Iowa, the son of Harley Franklin & Margaret (Kurtz) Blaylock.

He graduated from Kinross High School in 1943. He served in the United States Navy during WWII.

On July 10, 1948, he married H. Irene Banes, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they lived and farmed east of South English on the family farm.

Leon was a member of the Kinross Farmers Masonic Lodge No. 168 A.F. & A.M.. He enjoyed Hawkeye sports, tending to his flower garden, vacationing to Colorado, Seaside and Disney. He attended his grandchildren’s activities and he always said he wished he could raise one more load of Black Cattle.

Leon died on Monday, August 12, 2013, at his home after a short illness at the age of 87 years. He is survived by his wife Irene of South English; a son Randy (Barbara) Blaylock of Sigourney; two daughters Kristi (Tim) Bockenstedt of Burlington and Kathi (Maurice) Arbelaez of Leawood, KS; eight grandchildren: Rebecca (Matt) Johnson of Wilmette, IL, Chris (Anne) Blaylock of LaCrosse, WI, Ben (Sarah) Blaylock of Grimes, IA, Kyle Bockenstedt of Overland Park, KS, Patrick Bockenstedt of Jackson, MS, Brian Arbelaez, Madeline Arbelaez and Meredith Arbelaez all of Leawood, KS; five great grandchildren: Celia Blaylock, Harper Blaylock, Owen Johnson, Wyatt Johnson and Wynn Blaylock; and a sister: Leita Reed of Williamsburg.

He was preceded by his parents and a brother Marvin Blaylock.

Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2013, at the Powell Funeral Home, North English. Pastor Edwin Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery, near South English. Visitation will be on Friday, from 5:30 - 8:00 PM at the Powell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to: Mahaska-Keokuk County Hospice, the North Keokuk County Fire Department or the English Valley Dollars for Scholars.
