Ronald B. Fairchild, 82, of Iowa City, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at Mercy Iowa City. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, concluding with a time of sharing “Ron Stories.” Please come and share with his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Iowa City Hospice or the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center c/o the University of Iowa Foundation.

Ron was born Sept. 2, 1930, in Wallace, Idaho, the son of Horace Merrill “Jack” Fairchild and Louise (Thompson) Fairchild. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1948. He came to the University of Iowa, where he played football, lettering in 1949-1951. He graduated in 1953. He was an ROTC officer and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from 1953—1955. He worked for Texaco from 1956-1958 and then returned to Iowa City. He graduated from Physical Therapy School at the University of Iowa and worked at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1961-1965. He then became equipment manager for the University of Iowa Athletics Department. He retired from the university in 1992. He also owned and operated Coral Trailer Park in Coralville for over 50 years.
He married Mary Louise Veys on June 13, 1961. He was a member of the UI Letterman’s Association, Coralville American Legion, Iowa City Masonic Lodge and the Kaaba Shrine.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky (Rick) Graf, and grandchildren, Kevin and Emily Graf, all of Iowa City; sister, Judy Wilcke of Walcott; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou; his parents; and a sister, Barbara.
