Mary Alice Carter, 90

Memorial service for Mary Alice Carter, 90, West Des Moines, formerly of North English, was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Powell Funeral Home, North English. She died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Waukee, following a short illness.

The Rev. Luke Caster officiated at the service.

Burial was in the North English Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the North English Library or Dollars for Scholars.

Mary Alice Carter was born Feb. 7, 1923, in North English, the daughter of Edward G. and Addie S. Butler Harber. She lived most of her life in North English. After graduating from North English High School, she attended Parson’s College, Fairfield.

She married Arthur B. Carter Dec. 24, 1941, in Kirksville, Mo. She worked eight years at Farmers Savings Bank and 28 years as the board secretary and business manager for English Valleys Schools.

She was a member of the North English Christian Church, a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Fortnightly Club and volunteered at the North English Library.

She moved to West Des Moines in September 2001 and lived in the Lodge at Ashworth for 12 years.

Carter is survived by one daughter, Peg L. and Larry Bell, West Des Moines; one son, Thomas E. and Jane Carter, Bettendorf; five grandchildren, Curtis Bell, Jason Bell, Carrie Smith, Elizabeth Carter and Andrew Carter; eight great-grandchildren, Katie, Ian, Addie and Jamie Smith, Nate and Jay Bell and Ted and Charlie Bell.
