Robert Michalek, 86

Funeral Mass for Robert Michalek, 86, Victor, was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Victor. He died Aug. 31, 2013, at Brooklyn Community Estates.

The Rev. Brian Shepley officiated at the service.

Burial with military honors was in Calvary Cemetery, Victor.

Memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 354, Victor, Iowa 52347.

Smith Funeral Home, Victor, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Michalek was born April 27, 1927, the son of Vincent and Emma Nowotny Michalek, in Victor. He was raised in Victor and graduated from St. John’s Catholic School. He served in the United States Navy following graduation.

He married Lorretta McDonald May 8, 1954, at St. Bridget Church, Victor. The couple were married for 59 years, until her death in May of 2013.
He was a lifetime farmer but also served as the mayor of Victor for 22 years. He held other jobs during his career with Mohr Oil Company as a tank driver and Rohrer Brothers. He was active with the Victor City Council, American Legion, Knights of Columbus and was a volunteer for the Victor Fire Department.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards, but what he cherished most was spending time on his farm.

Michalek is survived by his children, Robert J. Michalek, Overland Park, Kan.; Timothy and Jileane Michalek, DeSoto, Kan.; Terry and Dawn Michalek, Hinkley, Minn., and Sarah and Ken Kaplan, Victor; one sister, Mary Pilcher, Bettendorf; in-laws, Bernadine Roushar, Cedar Rapids; Mary and Don Sumpter, Brooklyn; Katherine and Laverne Dietrich, Newton, and Jeanette and Bill Holtz, Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Charles Michalek, Lucille Crump, Margaret Masteller, Joan Walcher and Catherine Ingrassia.
