LOCATION: Brooklyn, IowaLaverne Neitzel, age 85, of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 12, 2013, at his home.
A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 20, 2013, at St. James Lutheran Church in Victor.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor. There will be reminiscing of farming in Iowa from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with guest speakers, Brian Chitwood and Roger Pawlak.
Memorials may be designated to the Laverne Neitzel memorial fund, and sent in care to the Smith Funeral Home, 808 4th Street, Victor, Iowa 52347. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.smithfh.com.
Laverne Marvin Neitzel was born on February 7, 1928, near Victor. He was the oldest child born to Alva and Emma (Meyer) Neitzel. He attended country schools near Guernsey and graduated from Guernsey High School with the class of 1947.
Following his education, Laverne went into farming with his father. He was the farmer who loved the land and his occupation so much that he ate, lived and breathed farming.
On January 2, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lillie Anna Emma Walter at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Williamsburg. They were married for 62 years until Lillie passed away on March 9, 2010.
Laverne was an active member with Farm Bureau throughout his career.
Laverne is survived by his daughter, Jeanette Scotten of Brooklyn; son, Gary Neitzel of Brooklyn; three grandchildren, Ethan Neitzel, Alena and Zachary Scotten.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillie; sister, Dorothy Stone; brother, Wayne in infancy.
