Bernard Upah, 87

Funeral service for Bernard L. Upah, 87, Chelsea, was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Hrabak Funeral Home, Belle Plaine. He died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center from congenital heart failure.

Deacon Joe Behounek officiated at the service.

Burial was in National Cemetery, Vining. Pallbearers were Michael Upah, Christopher Upah, Richard Upah, Daniel Upah, Alan Upah, Mark Upah, Steve Melsha and Marvin Melsha Jr.

Music was provided by Anna Upah, vocalist, and Judy Parizek, organist.

Bernard Leo Upah was born July 10, 1926, at Chelsea, the son of Leo E. and Albia Wobeter Upah. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School.

He married Carol Jean Melsha on Aug. 12, 1950, at Cedar Rapids. He was a lifelong farmer and was a rural mail carrier for 20 years. He lived his entire married life in Belle Plaine

He was member of Belle Plaine American Legion Post 39. He was a Korean Conflict veteran and served in Germany for two years with the 2nd Armored Division.

Upah is survived by his wife, Carol, Belle Plaine; sons, Kevin Upah, Des Moines, David Upah and Randy Upah, both of Belle Plaine; one brother, Robert Upah; three sisters, Amelia Gearhart, Phylis Hoffman and Juanita Meager; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Nicholis Upah, in infancy.
