Ralph Kahler, 77

Memorial service for Ralph L. Kahler, 77, Alamo, Texas, formerly of Cedar Rapids, was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Luzerne. He died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at his home in Middle Amana.

The Rev. Michael Musick officiated at the service.

Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens, Iowa City, at a later date.

A memorial fund has been established.

Ralph Lewis Kahler was born Oct. 5, 1935, in Marengo, the son of Harry and Josephine Landuyt Kahler. He received his education in Iowa County schools and served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954, stationed in Korea.

He married Yvonne Kober Oct. 10, 1959, in Iowa City. He was employed for 33 years with Farmstead Foods, Cedar Rapids, as a lineman and forklift operator.

He was an avid Iowa football fan. He loved his country and his flag. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially plants and flowers, and the animals, too. Shuffleboard was a favorite pastime.

His highest priority was his family and he loved to spend time with the kids, grandkids and the new great-grandchild. He was a loving and giving person, always helping others without hesitation.

Kahler is survived by his wife, Yvonne; two children, Randy and Julie Kahler, St. Joseph, Mo., and Laurie and Craig Dvorak, Belvidere, Ill.; four grandchildren, Trevor and Carlie Kahler, Liberty, Mo.; Ashley Dvorak, Belvidere; Trenton and Nikki Kahler, Bellevue, Neb., and Brock Dvorak, Belvidere; one great-grandchild, Jude Kahler; his siblings, Alice and Ivan Von Ahsen, Shellsburg; Kay and Ray Comried, Marion; Jean and Pat Gallagher, Cedar Rapids, and Ronnie and Linda Kahler, Monticello, and Gerry Kahler Herr and Lee Herr, Amana, who he loved like a sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Russell, and one sister, Eleanor Ealy.
