George Mullane, 90

Private graveside service for George E. Mullane, 90, Mesa Ariz., were held Friday, July 19, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown. He died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at his home with family members at his side.

George Ellis Mullane was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Iowa Falls, the son of Richard and Sadie Cutting Mullane. His mother died when he was 18 months old. He was raised by his aunts and later, his father.

He served with pride in the United States Navy during World War II and had been a long-time member of the Blairstown American Legion. He also maintained his membership in the Elks Lodge in Iowa Falls.

He married Eva L. (Bonnie) Farwell Dec. 20, 1947. She died in 1965.

He operated his own business, George’s Tap, in Blairstown for 20 years.

He married Kay Franklin on Aug. 29, 1970. In 1975 they moved to Arizona and before retiring, they managed apartment complexes in the Phoenix-Mesa area. Upon retiring, they made their home at The Meadows, Tempe, Ariz. and most recently at Bella Vista Senior Living, Mesa, Ariz.

For many years, George enjoyed working at spring training at Diablo Stadium in Tempe, where he was known as “Mr. Bubble Gum.”

He excelled in sports during his high school years, especially in football. He was a generous and thoughtful person who loved his family, friends, children, dogs, playing cards, watching sports on TV, listtening to music and in earlier years, playing golf. He will be missed by all who were fortunate to have known him. Somewhere in Heaven, he is saying “Top ‘o the morning!”

Mullane is survived by two sons, R. Michael and Jeanette Mullane, Portland, Ore., and Patrick Ellis and Kathy Mullane, Marengo; one grandson, Riley Ellis and Melissa Mullane, Cedar Rapids; two stepchildren, J. Michael Franklin, Tempe, and Barbara and Vance Fuller, Cedar Rapids; two stepgrandchildren, Carrie and Jim Nachazel, Grinnell, and Lisa Fuller, Phoenix, Ariz., and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Oliver Nachazel and Arthur Nachazel, Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bonnie; his parents; three sisters, four brothers and his second wife, Mary Catherine (Kay), in 2009.

George Ellis Mullane, 90, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Blairstown, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at his home in Mesa with members of family at his side. Private graveside services will be scheduled at a later date.
