Vera Greene, 90

Funeral Mass for Vera V. Greene, 90, North English, was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, North English. She died Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

The Rev. Joseph Roost officiated at the service.

Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sigourney.

A general memorial fund has been established.

Vera Virginia Greene was born March 16, 1923, near Harper, the daughter of John and Agnes (Hammes) Bombei. She attended Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School at Clear Creek.

She married John M. Greene May 14, 1946, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The couple farmed north of Keswick. They moved to Valley View Assisted Living in North English in the spring of 2011.

She loved being in the kitchen cooking for her family and friends. She was known for her cinnamon rolls. She was a wonderful seamstress for her six daughters. She was extremely proud of and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In recent years she enjoyed watching the many birds out of her window.

She was a former parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Keswick, and a current parishioner of St. Joseph Church, North English.

Greene is survived by eight children, Carol and Dennis Wolff, Oelwein; John R. Greene, Webster; Gerald and Holly Greene, Deep River; Joan Braymen, Shawnee, Kan.; Mary and Dale Smith, Decorah; Denise and John Conrad, Rose Hill; Roberta and Dave Stakland, Washington, and Judy Greene, Bettendorf; 22 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in August 2011; her parents; sisters, Mildred Striegel, Alma Striegel and Dorothy Conrad, and brothers, Irvin and Leonard Bombei.
