Russell Blomme, 69

Funeral service for Russell E. Blomme, 69, Marengo, was held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. He died Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at his home following an extended illness.

Mercy Hospice chaplain Joe Kane officiated at the service.

Burial was in Hartwick Cemetery, Hartwick, with military honors.

A memorial fund has been established.

Russell Emiel Blomme was born July 27, 1943, in Marengo, the son of Emiel and and Marie Steyaert Blomme. He graduated from Victor High School in 1961. He served his country as a member of the Army Reserves.

He married Susan Duffus and they had two children. The couple later divorced.

He married Carol Lea Miller Oct. 11, 1986, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

He was employed over the years at Maschmann Gulf Gas Station, Victor, and the Fetzer Gas Station which he later purchased and named Russ’ DX. He then went to work at Dusty’s Tire, Coralville, and lastly was employed by the University of Iowa, Iowa City.

He was a member of Victor American Legion Post 54 and enjoyed woodworking in his free time.

Blomme is survived by his wife, Carol; one son, Jon and Vicki Blomme Victor; one daughter, Stefani and Jon Vaverka, Brooklyn; one grandchild, Camiel Blomme; one brother, Vernon and Mary Ellen, Belle Plaine; one sister Beverly Maschmann, and special friends, Donna Poessel and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Colton Blomme; three brothers, Richard, Virgil and Howard, and a brother-in-law, Russell Maschmann.
