Celebration of life service for Freda M. Wade, 89, North English, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service, North English. She died Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg.

The Rev. Michelle Williamson will officiate at the service. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the North English Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established for English Valleys Dollars for Scholars.

Freda Marie Wade was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Pekin, the daughter of Fred and Grace Zepp McCreery. She grew up in the Pekin community and graduated from Martinsburg High School. She attended Central College and later earned a bachelor of arts degree from William Penn College.

She married Walter E. “Bud” Wade May 17, 1945, in Ottumwa. They made their home in North English where she taught elementary school (third grade, second grade and kindergarten) in the North English and English Valleys school districts for 43 years, retiring in 1985.

Upon retirement, the couple moved to San Juan, Texas, but she returned to North English after his death.

She was a member of the North English United Methodist Church, a retired member of Delta Kappa Gamma and a past member of the Rebekah Lodge. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed reading and watching the WNBA. She moved to Highland Ridge in 2010.

Wade is survived by her children, Claudia and Harold Gillette, Winthrop; Jim and Linda, South English, and John Wade and Joyce Becker, Jackson, Mo.; five cherished grandchildren, Brent Wade, Bryce Wade, Stacie Gillette, Valarie Christensen and Jeff Gillette, and six great-grandchildren, Jillian Christensen, Addison Christensen, Makaela Gillette, Jake Gillette, Michael Gillette and Isaiah Gillette.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Keith McCreery; two sisters, Lela Gwen Smith and Lena Pearl Hayes, and an infant grandson, Benjamin Gillette.
